Everything you need to know about tattoo colours

Tattooing is a millennium-old tradition, the beginning of which cannot be precisely documented. What is known, however, is that the history goes back to the Bronze Age, in which Ötzi lived 5300 years ago. And he too was already tattooed.

The history of tattoo colour

The tattoo colors of the time consisted of natural substances such as burnt wood for black and a mixture of mushrooms, burnt rubber and animal fats for lighter shades. For colourful artwork, on the other hand, plant dyes or colours made from different layers of earth were used. The black pigment extracted from the wood was primarily used for facial tattoos, while other pigments were used as outlines.
At the beginning of the Japanese Edo period, 1603 - 1868, tattoos were particularly popular among prostitutes and workers. Tattoos have even been discovered on the hands and feet of 7,000-year-old mummies from northern Chile. Ötzi's body is adorned with almost 50 tattoos.
To this day, tattoos are becoming more popular and also more respected in our society.

Colour certificates

Since we care about what we sell you, it is very important to us to offer you a great selection of colours that also meet the current standards. We therefore only stock tattoo colours that we fully stand behind. Transparency is an important issue for us, which is why you can view certificates for the tattoo colours. The various documents refer to the tattoo colours in our range and include declarations of conformity (colour certificates), heavy metal data sheets and safety data sheets (SDS).
Declarations of Conformity are communication documents from manufacturers in which they declare that they produce their products in accordance with applicable legal guidelines.
Important for tattoo artists are also the heavy metal data sheets. Heavy metals determined in the laboratory (e.g. nickel) or their absence are indicated in this document.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are important for importers, distributors and shipping companies in case of accidents.

Today's colour and REACH

The REACH regulation came into force for the first time on 04.01.2022. Since then, certain chemicals that occur in tattoo colours have been subject to restrictions. Old tried and tested colours had to be taken out of the product range. The aim of REACH is not to ban tattoos, but to make tattoo colours and permanent make-up safer.
At the beginning of 2023, the requirements were extended again and the two pigments "Blue 15:3" and "Green 7" fell victim to the new REACH standard. The trade, storage and use of products with these two pigments was no longer permitted from then on. Tattoo artists were required to dispose of products stored on their premises that complied with national and EU directives.
The tattoo industry suffered greatly from this reform and the ink manufacturers also had to reorient themselves. New colours had to be created and tested. So that we can give you, the customer, the security that the colours available from us comply with the standard, you can download the certificates from us.
